Chili & Garlic Broiled Jumbo Shrimp (served on toasted farmhouse bread), Carrot Mango Salad, Aunt Dot’s Macaroni & Cheese, Grilled, Smoked Pork Ribs with BBQ Rum Sauce, Buttermilk Marinated Fried Chicken and a side of Half and Half (2 Biscuits, 2 Cornbreads)

@ Soul Flavors - Jersey City, NJ

Thoughts: No.  This was not a meal for one.  And yes. You should be jealous.  This. was. fantastic.  FYI - You need a reservation for Soul Flavors on a Friday night.

Apps and Sides.  We started off with the shrimp app, which is recommendable - very blackened and full of buttery, garlicky, succulent flavor.  The mac and cheese did not disappoint - melty and cheesy, as any dish of this sort should be.  The carrot mango salad was strictly due to a guilty conscience - "Ugh… Don’t you think we should have some kind of vegetable with this meal?"  Honestly, it was delightful - the carrots and onions in the salad were lightly pickled, and overall it was quite refreshing.

Enough screwing around though - let’s get to the heavy hitters..

Buttermilk Marinated Fried Chicken. Wtf. Seriously, how do you get so much flavor in fried chicken?  I will say it… this is some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had.  It has everything you want - crispy, fried (but not too thick) goodness protecting a juicy and flavorbanging center.  Disclaimer: I can only speak of the white meat… which actually says a lot.  They also have a fried chicken and waffle thing going on, but only available on the weekends up through 5pm.

Smoked Pork Ribs with BBQ Rum Sauce. Not what I was expecting at all, and it surprised in an excellent way.  The meat was literately falling off the bone.  Not possible to eat without utensils, this was so tender, so good, so so f’ing good.  My mind is being blown again just thinking about it.  Yes, you may have had a bbq rum sauce in the past, but this ish was exquisite.

You. Go. To. Soul Flavors. Bring. A. Friend. And. An. Appetite. Enjoy.

Also, bring your wallet - this place is not cheap, but not incredibly expensive (avg $6 for sides, $10 for app, $16 for main course).  and BYOB.

Lastly, the chef was on Chopped…and won.
